The Siang River, which originates in Tibet (where it is called the Yarlung Tsangpo River), flows south through Arunachal Pradesh, before it flows in a southwesterly direction through Assam, where it is called the Brahmaputra. In Arunachal Pradesh, the Siang River flows through land primarily inhabited by the Adi tribe, who revere the river. For the Adi tribe, the Siang River is a symbol of power and energy, and only the animistic Adi God, ‘Donyi-Polo’, has the power to make it flow or stop. Both banks of the river are home to some amazing forest and biodiversity. The Mouling National Park is on the river’s west bank. Community forest abounds in all areas on either bank of the river.
